Description
Make maths fun for Early Years children using the Maths: Number and Counting Going Home Discovery Bag 4-5yrs, perfect for fostering an early interest in maths.
The Early Excellence Going Home Discovery Bags feature carefully selected Early Years resources, designed to support children’s learning and development at home. The ready-made bags include high-quality resources and age-appropriate books that enhance children’s communication, language, mathematical thinking and social development while promoting meaningful interactions between caregivers and children. The maths Discovery Bags focus on developing mathematical language and skills in counting, identifying patterns and colours, and developing understanding of shape, space and measure.
The Maths: Number and Counting Going Home Discovery Bag contains 2 storybooks and a range of high quality early years maths resources including a maths jigsaw, 0-10 counting cards, coloured counting sticks, a range of dice and spinners and 2 sets of 10 counting creatures.
Children will enjoy using the counting crabs and fish alongside the 2 maths story books, helping to bring the stories to life whilst encouraging counting to 10 in a relaxed, playful way. This experience encourages the caregiver to become part of their child’s maths learning journey and helps to make maths meaningful for the child.
Use the maths resources to set up a range of maths activities to make learning about counting and number enjoyable and fun for children. Children can roll the 2 dice, count the dots and use the small counting creatures to match with the number of dots on each die. Challenge children to count up the number of creatures they have, practising addition skills. Develop the game further by encouraging subitising - can they recognise the number of dots or creatures they have by sight as opposed to counting them one by one? This maths activity helps develop children's counting and recognition skills. Frequent and playful maths activities will help develop children's confidence in counting.
Make a game around the home using the blue 0-10 number squares and coloured counting sticks or creatures. Hide the number squares and ask children to find the number then return to count out the corresponding number of coloured counting sticks or creatures. When all numbers are found, can the child separate the coloured sticks by colour and count how many they have of each? Spark conversations with the children “Do you have more green sticks than blue?” “How many more green sticks do you have? How do you know?”
Take the number cards and go on a number hunt. Look for numbers on everyday items around the home and ask children to match the number. These could be found on television remotes, toy telephones, labels in children’s clothing, leaflets with telephone numbers. This supports awareness of numbers in their everyday environment.
The maths set is conveniently stored in a sturdy transparent zipped bag, making it easy for practitioners to share the learning resources with families to take home and enjoy.
